Michael at Stonehenge

Michael at Stonehenge

Michael (Dominic Guard) has returned to the Rock searching for Miranda by himself. He retraces his steps following the trail of notepaper he had torn from a pigskin notebook earlier in the day.

He passes a lone standing stone surrounded by larger rock formations:

The Location

Dominic Guard was walking through an area of the Hanging Rock Reserve known as “Stonehenge”:

“Stonehenge” today.

You can reach “Stonehenge” by following Michael’s paper trail underneath “The Hanging Rock”. The quickest way to get there is to start at the “Picnic Ground” which in real life is the base of “Morgan’s Blood Waterfall” by “Queen Mary’s Profile” (that’s numbers 1 and 2 on the Park Map).

“Queen Mary’s Profile” and “Morgan’s Blood Waterfall” – the site of the Picnic Ground scene

From “Morgan’s Blood Waterfall” follow the signs to “Vampire Cliff” (number 3 on the Park Map) and in front of you will be “The Hanging Rock” (number 5 on the Park Map).

You'll pass

You’ll pass “Vampire Cliff” on the track heading toward “The Hanging Rock” taking the same route Michael (Dominic Guard” followed in 1975

After passing underneath the Hanging Rock the path ends with “Stonehenge” on your left and Central Area Forest in front of you.

Passing underneath

Passing underneath “The Hanging Rock” leads to “Stonehenge”

Since filming in 1975 a cement stairway has been paved into the rock (above). After passing under “The Hanging Rock” the original natural pathway to “Stonehenge” was a few metres to the right of the current track. How do we know this? The Picnic at Hanging Rock Limited Edition book contains a photo from a deleted scene of Miranda (Anne Lambert) and Marion (Jane Vallis) climbing the original track with “The Hanging Rock” behind them (8).

An outtake released by the National Film and Sound Archive in 2016 shows Rachel Roberts as Mrs Appleyard reaching the top of the same original pathway:

A small green leafed tree now stands where Miranda (Anne Lambert), Marion (Jane Vallis) and Mrs Appleyard (Rachel Roberts) once walked:
