“Miranda don’t go up there. Come back.”

1975

The film’s most iconic scene takes place in front of the Monolith after the characters wake from sleep.

Edith wakes as Miranda, Marion and Irma walk toward the Monolith:

"Miranda I feel awful. Really awful. Miranda I feel perfectly awful. When are we going home?"

“Miranda I feel awful. Really awful. Miranda I feel perfectly awful. When are we going home?”

As Edith watches they walk into the crack in the rock, and slowly disappear:

“Miranda … “

“Miranda … “

Edith steps back toward the cliff edge and yells as she watches the girls disappear:

"Miranda don't go up there. Come back."

“Miranda don’t go up there. Come back.”

The Location

While there is more vegetation in the area than in 1975 the Monolith and surrounding rock where the characters slept is unchanged:

“Suddenly overcome by an overpowering lassitude, all four girls flung themselves down on the gently sloping rock in the shelter of the monolith, and there fell into a sleep so deep that a horned lizard emerged from a crack to lie without fear in the hollow of Marion’s outflung arm.”

Use this Google Maps photo sphere to step into the scene. The sphere is taken standing on the ground where the characters awoke from sleep before disappearing into the rock :

In real life the gap in the Monolith leads to Edith’s log from a previous scene. Don’t believe me? Follow Miranda’s footsteps in the Youtube clip below and see where we end up:

This is also the same gap “Michael” (Dominic Guard) tries to crawl up when searching for Miranda. Peter Weir filmed Dominic Guard from the top of the gap looking downwards. Miranda’s disappearance was filmed from the bottom of the same gap.

Albert (John Jarratt) crawled up the same gap just before he found Irma (Karen Robson).

To identify where Christine Schuler turned look closely at the rock to the right of shot (below):

The rock behind Christine Schuler is directly opposite where the characters slept and is unchanged in 2015:

Where exactly at Hanging Rock is this? You won’t find it on the park map and you won’t find it on Street View! Like most locations in this guide I recommend you orient yourself by starting at “The Saddle” which is number 8 on the park map.

Watch the full video below to find how to get from the “The Saddle” to the Monolith which is where Miranda disappeared.
