“We can’t go much further … “

1975

Edith, Marion, Irma and Miranda, have been exploring a passageway within the Rock.

There are slow motion shots as Miranda pauses to look at her surroundings:

Ridges in the rock above Miranda help identify this location.

An ‘X’ shape is on the rock wall as Miranda passes by.

As Miranda reaches the end of the passageway, she turns and says, “We can’t go much further. We promised Mam’selle, we wouldn’t be long away.”

“We can’t go much further … “

The characters step out onto (what Joan Lindsay described as) “… an almost circular platform enclosed by rocks and boulders and a few straight saplings.” (1)

Joan Lindsay referred to this area as

The “almost circular platform”

The Location

You’ll find this passageway really does open out onto the “circular platform”.  This is where Miranda said “we can’t go much further.”

Peter Weir filmed the actors approximately 20 metres down the passageway from the “circular platform”.

Step into the passageway with this Google Maps photo sphere:

Unfortunately there’s no way to climb up to get the same overhead perspective. However, you can still walk down the passageway in the actors’ footsteps.

Walking from left to right - that's in opposite direction to where the scene ends.

To see this specific location it’s easier to start your walk down the passageway from where the scene ended at the “circular platform”.

You can confirm you’ve found the end of the passageway by looking closely below at the “J” shaped groove in the rock surface and the “dog-tooth” feature above it:

Here’s the same feature in today:

Turning around, with the “circular platform” at your back, now move down the passageway. Here’s the current view down the passageway with the “circular platform” at your back:

Continue walking down the passageway and you’ll immediately see where Anne Lambert paused during the slow motion shots. Look closely at the “X” shaped markings in the wall, you can see those in the film quite clearly:

The second frame can be identified by the ridges on the far wall. You can see those above Anne Lambert in the film:

One unique rock formation (red highlight below) is barely noticeable in the movie but appears famously in a range of post production material such as DVD covers and other items:

Where Anne Lambert rested her hand (red highlight above) is also where she posed for this famous still (below):

Barely noticeable in the film as Anne Lambert passed by but famously obvious from ground level. This shot taken from the cover of Joan Lindsay Picnic at Hanging Rock Limited Edition

Here’s a similar perspective today (click to enlarge):

Turning slightly right, here’s the actors’ perspective as they walked from left to right through this part of the passageway:

The passage is quite narrow and in 2014 there is considerable tree and rockfall debris

The Joan Lindsay Picnic at Hanging Rock Limited Edition book shows a picture of Karen Robson (Irma) posing inside the same rock formation (9):

Between a rock and a hard place, Karen Robson (Irma) poses in the same rock formation the characters had passed by

There’s also an excellent outtake held at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia showing Karen Robson inside the rock formation as the girls pass by:

How do we know Anne Lambert (Miranda) and the others really did walk along this passageway and exit onto an “almost circular platform”? Let’s walk up the passageway to the “circular platform” and look through the “porthole” just like Irma and Miranda:

Finally, here’s where Anne Lambert reached the end of the passageway and said “We can’t go much further”:

Where exactly at Hanging Rock is this? You won’t find it on the park map and you won’t find it on Street View! Like most locations in this guide I recommend you orient yourself by starting at “The Saddle” which is number 8 on the park map.

Watch the full video below to find how to get from the “The Saddle” to the passageway.
